Robert, you got my compliment here for such a nice and meaningful article...

I loved the words "Finding the End of Yourself"; as most of the people still confused with the meaning of "Life", and to be honest I'm one of those poor people! Although the journey of life isn't easy, but I'm sure will find my own path at the end...

It <i>is</i> a great image, isn't it Karen? I like how you've related it to life.

As I get more experienced with this sort of sales, I'm sure it'll be a lot less traumatic. It's just that this first time, you know... Thanks for the encouragement. I'm sure even Bill Gates lost a little sleep back at the beginning.

Hi Robert, wow, what a story! The line that jumped out at me and sticks in my head is "be the water." Wow! That has such a deep meaning for me. Water is so essential to our being. It is a symbol of peace, healing, cleansing and forgiveness. It drenches the fiery part of life and nurtures the parched places. "Be the water." Definitely words to remember and live by. This type of thing in sales is quite normal. You managed it like a pro, you recognized the snafus and set about dealing with them. Winning the client is only half the battle, you then have to manage all of the moving parts until there is a signature on the dotted line...and then the real fun begins. :-) You did a fine job Robert!

Robert what a great story - I''m sure we've all been there. And you know when it really counts everything seems to be magnified doesn't it?

I love the message: be the water.

I'll try :-)

And I loved the bit about your "easy" button laughing hysterically. Hope you hit it good and hard when you got back

@Robyn - It struck me that you said that serotonin effects both the brain AND the intestines. So that's what that dramatic relaxing feeling in my stomach was once everything was signed, sealed, and delivered! Wow, what a feeling, after having spent so many days tensed up like I was.

Thanks so much for sharing that knowledge - if I hadn't already been a regular reader of yours, I'd have never known.

@Ellen - So, it's really true, eh? :-D

I'm tellin' ya, Ellen, there must have been a whole heap o' rewirin' goin' on that night! The next day, even though it was essentially spent in planes and airports, was a great time for preparation. By the time the actual event began, I was fired up!

Believe me, I'll write again about it if we win the work!

Robert, we've all been there! You now see in action that the kind words led to the release of serotonin, a brain chemical of well-being in your brain and intestines, too. This story actually shows how powerful that chemical is. There are many other tactics to release serotonin to overcome the cortisol which flooded your brain under stress.

Ellen wrote on serotonin in Brain Leaders and Learners, her new blog. Serotonin's very amazing and powerful. I think you'd enjoy it.

Robert, since stress literally shrinks the human brain, I am so glad you left stress behind, and ran with humor which has the opposite effect!

As a Canadian, I find myself saying "eh" again and again, and US friends or clients always notice it:-) - Canadians never seem to notice:-).

As I read your piece, Robert, I laughed on one hand, and saw a great deal of value you added to folks on the other. It's when people begin to use the wonderful wealth you offered, that new fireworks will go off for them.

Research shows that nightly when we sleep the human brain rewires itself for the innovations (and anything else) that it engaged in that day. So it's critical to touch base with some of them again after they sleep and use the insights:-)

Hey, ley us know the results -- wish I could have been there because I would have learned a ton! Thanks for sharing Robert, Best, Ellen

Jean, I wish I'd had that confidence in the midst of the, er, mess. Oh, I guess I assumed it <em>would</em> all work out - I just couldn't see how at the time. Next time will go easier, I think, no matter what comes. He said. ;-)

Great story! I knew it would turn out all right, so I chuckled the whole time. I also love the Indiana Jones quote: “I don’t know; I’m makin’ this up as I go.” That's a keeper.

Actually I'm pretty good at giving encouragement...I agree, there's nothing like it.

@Karen H. - You know, the more I get into this, the more I think it's true. I'm reminded of Indiana Jones' favorite line when someone asks him what he plans to do next: <em>"I don't know; I'm makin' this up as I go."</em>

No need for pins, Karen - that's a waste of a good pin!

@Karen P. - So <em>that's</em> what that strange noise was! Thought Hurricane Ike had made an early landfall... :-D

Ah, then you know the feeling - how a few little well-chosen words can work miracles. It's a wonderful feeling to be on the receiving end of 'em, but how fun to be the one who shares them! Way to go!
