What’s With the Big “G”?
If you're new around these parts, I just want to say how much I appreciate your dropping by! Oh, and you may want to subscribe to my feed. Thanks, and a tip o' the hat to ya!
Wondering why some folks have their images next to their comments, while others have this big, weird “G”? Well Bubba, It’s no mystery! That’s ’cause they’ve registered an Avatar at gravatar.com! Hey, why not pop on over there and register? It’s easy, it’s free, and best of all, every website that reads those things will show your smilin’ face (or whatever it is you’ve chosen to represent you) automatically every time you drop by! Now c’mon; don’cha think that would make the world a better place?
You know, it would just be absolutely finer than a frogs hair if you would subscribe to my RSS feed!

I’d second that - I think gravatars are fabulous, and once you’ve done it you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it before!
Mind you the big G isn’t as entertaining as the monster icons Brad was showing of his readers last week…
Joanna
I wish I could display a custom icon for the mystery guests, though. Maybe the hat outline from my MZM biz card would be appropriate. Or a gooney bird. Or something.
Robert,
I registered and uploaded my picture a long time ago … but it never worked. Just went over to the site and discovered you have to link the gravatar to a specific e-mail address. I had the e-mail address registered. I had the gravatar uploaded. I just hadn’t connected the two.
Hope it will work now.
I hope other folks are a little brighter than I am about this.
I hope it does too, Lillie. I think it takes a little time to show up though, so be patient!
Lillie, I was the same - it took me ages to realise what I was doing wrong! I can see you now though.
Robert, couldn’t you have a selection of hats for your guests? I’m not going to ask what a gooney bird is!

What a great idea, Joanna! If I knew some programming I could probably build a routine that would randomly assign an image (for those who don’t have one of their own) from a preselected group. Anyone know how to program that? Make a nice plugin, don’t you think?
By the way, here’s your answer to the gooney bird…
Robert,
Did this work?
And I’m working on my “Life is a…” entry. Really I am.

I have never heard of this “gravatar” before. I will have to check it out. Thanks
Wow, how nice to see you guys! Glad you took the time to register. Sam, you’re lookin’ good, Buddy! Brian, I look forward to seeing your smilin’ face, or whatever, soon!
Now we have to do something about those faceless folks in MyBlogLog! :-O
The Big G is amazing , I am looking for one that relates to my personality
I know what you mean; that “G” is a bit boring. Perhaps this one might do?
Robert,
Finally decided to go for the gravatar. Thanks for the push! That reclining “G” is pretty boring!

Well, I see it didn’t work–even though my avatar was (and is) visible beside the preview of my comment which is displayed below the comment insertion window. Not sure why that would be. (Think IE is acting up again?)
Funny, I had been planning to write the following in my first comment: “Wonder if it will work.” Then, when I looked at my comment preview, it appeared to be working, so I deleted that statement. Strange!
OK, I give up. Now it’s decided to work and make a liar out of me!
Please do all of us a favor and delete my second and third comments, will you, Robert?
Thanks!
Jeanne
Oh, Jeanne, life is a learning experience, don’cha think? Bwa-ha-ha-ha! No worries; it just took a few minutes or maybe an hour for it to propagate throughout the blogosphere.
Hey, thanks for doing it!
Funny, though, the way the gravatar showed up in the preview but not in the comment itself initially. Glad everything straightened itself out.
You are so right about life, Robert (even if your remark was meant a teensy bit mischievously). Life certainly is a learning experience — a never-ending one! If it weren’t, there would be no MZM. (Perish the thought!)
Glad I followed your advice and picked up my gravatar — even if I did experience a bit of initial confusion!
Jeanne
Gasp! No MZM! What would the world be like? (Shudder)
I, too, shudder to think where we would be without MZM! There would definitely be one huge hole in the blogosphere!
Yeah, a cowboy-hat-shaped one at that!
No doubt about that! But, though I have nothing at all against cowboy hats, that’s definitely one cowboy hat I wouldn’t want to see!
Yup; I can see it now… “The Stetson That Ate My Brain” (sound of terrified screams)
Film at 11.
Or maybe “The Stetson That Ate My Blog“?
Ideas for the next big horror sensation: The Stetson That Ate My…

Some of your ideas (er…in this list) are a lot more horrifying than others!
Yeah, but on the other hand, I think I just mapped out my blog posts for the next month! And this is just the “B’s”!
