What I Learned From… The World of Sports
Howdy y’all! Do you know what today is? That’s right (sound of huge crowd cheering; cue the fireworks; cue the band…); it’s that time of the month again! (No silly, not that time of the month; I’m talkin’ about the other thing…)
Yep, it’s time for another round of stories from you guys for this month’s What I Learned From… group writing project.
We just celebrated Thanksgiving Day here in the U.S., which is typically a four-day flurry of food, family, fun, and yes, football (and I’m talkin’ real football here, not that “round ball” thingie the rest of the world calls football). Well, that sortof got me to thinking (that grinding noise you hear) about some of the things I learned while participating in group sports.
Now, I’m guessing the odds are pretty good that practically everyone has participated in a sport-like activity of one sort or another. As an adult or as a kid – hey, chances are we’ve all done something. Heck, even watching a sport on TV, or being in the stands will qualify you for this one, folks!
So we’ll celebrate that fact with this month’s topic: The World of Sports.
What the heck does that mean, you ask? Well, you can write anything you like, as long as it has something to do with The World of Sports. Have you ever played any kind of organized sport (or disorganized for that matter)? Yep, thought so.
So what did you learn from it? Be specific. Be non-specific. Be creative. Be as eloquent (or as brief) as you like. But most of all, be yourself – and write something!
Now don’t forget; as is customary, this project will be open for contributions for only one week – from now thru next Sunday night, December 9th. (And as usual, should you or any of your team be caught or killed, or, you know, break a fingernail or something during the execution of this project, the Secretary will deny all knowledge of your existence).
Here’s all you have to do to participate:
- Write a new post on your blog with a link to THIS POST (uh, the one you’re reading now). There are no limits to the number of words you can use, so feel free to be as eloquent (or concise) as you like. C’mon, show off if you like.
- Include in the title the phrase: “What I Learned From _____”
- Send me an email (rhruzek@sbcglobal.net) containing your name, the title of your post, and the permalink of the post. (I usually notice the trackbacks, but this will make sure I don’t miss it.)
That’s all you have to do! I will post the entire list of entries next Monday, December 10th.
As always here at the Zone, there are just two simple rules:
- For the sake of the general blogging audience, please keep it G-Rated. (Also please note: this is a request, not a demand, since after all it’s your blog and you can do what you want. However, fair warning: I reserve the right to choose to link to you or not.)
- Be nice.
Ladies and gentlemen, start your pencils!

Hi there Robert.
I guess it is about time I contributed to one of these crazy writing projects. Will let you know the link soon – probably tomorrow.
In the meantime – I must challenge your statement about “real” football. How can you possibly call your form of the game “football” when you mostly carry or throw it and hardly ever kick the darn thing?
At least with the round ball most of the team are not allowed to touch the ball but must at least kick it.
But both codes are not real football. That’s played Down Under – the real game is Aussie Rules Football, played by real men with no protective gear and few stoppages to regroup. Fast, furious, frenetic and fantastic!
[...] All the details can be found on his post called “What I learned from…the world of sports.” [...]
Trevor, I knew that would rile someone up!
But I gotta agree with you – games like rugby and that Aussie Rules thing (is it the same game?) – well, as they say, it definitely takes *ahem* leather balls!
Looking forward to your contribution!
Here’s to 30 entries Robert – I’m betting MZM goes over the top with this one!
Thanks, Bob! Um… I look forward to seeing yours, too!

Robert – let me correct you – Aussie Rules Football and Rugby are definitely NOT the same code.
What you call Football in America is directly derived from the English game of Rugby (from the college of the same name) and has many similarities (but without the heavy protective gear). Rugby Union and Rugby League are variations of the code. Both have strong followings. The major difference in the rugby codes is that the ball must always be passed to a player behind – never forward of the player in possession. The rugby codes also have some differences relating to tackles and scrums.
Australian Rules Football is quite different and has its origins in Irish Gaelic Football. Both countries play each other in occasional international games being a composite of both codes. The future of these matches is in doubt; the last few have ended up being blood baths! Ah, the Irish – and their Aussie descendants.
By way of extra interest, we have five football codes active in Australia. All are quite popular:
Australian Rules
Rugby Union
Rugby League
Soccer (that round ball game)
American Football (we call it gridiron here) – with a small but fanatic following.
Wow, Trevor; I stand corrected! I never knew there were so many types of Football in the world. Thanks for straightening me out.
Almost worth another installment of WILF for that!
Cheers!
