What I Learned From… the Law

If you're new here, I just want to say how much I appreciate your dropping by! Oh, and you may want to subscribe to my feed. Thanks, and a tip o' the hat to ya!

WILFI fought the law and the law won.
I fought the law and the law won.

- Refrain from the song, I Fought the Law

Howdy y’all, and welcome to the umpteenth dodecannual (Sounds kinda cool, doesn’t it? But is “dodecannual” really a word? Who cares!) What I Learned From… group writing project (sound of crowd cheering wildly)!

[It seemed appropriate to kick off this month’s edition of our project with a few lines from a relatively memorable song from the ‘60s titled I Fought the Law. Now admittedly, if you read the lyrics, you’ll probably find yourself wondering - just what the heck caused it to be so memorable? On the other hand, this song may hold the distinction of being the only known song whose playing helped capture a dictator.]

Anyhoo - This month’s topic:

The LAW

.

Hey, I told you this month’s topic had already been announced somewhere here at the Zone - if you could find it. Alas, only one person sent me an email with the correct answer. (Congratulations! You win a cookie!)

But in the meantime, I’d like to thank Mary Donnelly of Our House Gallery and Framing for suggesting it. Thanks, Mary! (In case you’re wondering where it was all this time, take a look at the comments on the WILF page. And while you’re there, make a suggestion of your own, why don’cha?)

Now, I just know that none of you out there have *ahem* ever had what’cha might call an up-close-and-personal encounter with the law, right? But heck, why should that keep you from learning something from it, right? (If nothing else, maybe you learned how to, er, avoid such encounters?)

Besides, chances are you’ve probably seen at least part of an episode of CSI, LA Law, or one of the other zillions of *cough*cough* “law” shows on TV. (Believe it or not, I never have — does that make me “abby-normal”?) Come to think of it, you probably live in a society of laws, too - so c’mon; that had to teach you somethin’!

As usual, you can pretty much write anything you like, as long as it illustrates a lesson (or lessons) learned. Be specific. Be non-specific. And, since I never impose a restriction on length, be as eloquent as you like (or go the other way and be brief - last month Joanna Young sent in a one-word entry! No doubt tryin’ to be cute… :-D )

But most of all, be yourself - and write something! And don’t forget the details…

As is customary, this project will be open to contributions for only one week - from now thru next Sunday night, March 9th. (And as usual, should you or any of your team be caught or killed, or, you know, break a fingernail or something during the execution of this project, the Secretary will disavow all knowledge of your existence).

To participate, here’s all you have to do:

  • Write a new post on your blog with a link to THIS POST (uh, the one you’re reading now). As I said, feel free to be as eloquent (or concise) as you like. C’mon; show off for us!
  • Include in the title the phrase: “What I Learned From _____” (or something like that)
  • Send me an email (rhruzek@sbcglobal.net) containing your name, the title of your post, and the permalink of the post. (To make sure I don’t miss it.)

That’s all there is to it! Next Monday, March 10th, I will post the entire list of entries right here at the Middle Zone - so be sure and drop by to check ‘em all out.

As always here at the Zone, we have just two simple rules:

  1. For the sake of the general blogging audience, please keep it G-Rated. (Also please note: this is a request, not a demand, since after all it’s your blog and you can do what you want. Fair warning: I can choose to link to you or not.)
  2. Be nice.

All right, ladies and gentlemen; you know what to do! Start your pencils!

[Note from the Proprietor - I realize it takes a little time to write your entries, but would you mind too terribly not waiting until midnight, Sunday night to notify me? It’s difficult to get them all compiled by Monday’s 6 am post time! I appreciate it, and what the heck - have another cookie!]

You know, it would just be absolutely finer than a frogs hair if you would subscribe to my RSS feed!

Well now Robert, will have to think about this one… when it comes to the law I admit my frame of reference is 99-1 opinion versus fact… but then again, that might be normal far as the law goes anyway…

  10. Jeanne Dininnion Mar 3rd 2008 at 7:35 pm

    Robert,

Sounds like there’s a lot that can be done with this one. Hmmm, let’s see…

@ Joanna - See? All you needed was the appropriate motivational substance! As for how I knew… well, I guess since we see pretty much eye-to-eye on so much, I just, well, knew.

@ Karin - Yikes! Glad you guys made it through the trials, though, and are now doing well!

What I Learned From Not Writing About What I Learned From The Law…

I am fascinated by the writing process (you might have noticed). And I guess we can learn just as much from what we don’t, won’t or can’t write as what we do. I had a ‘couldn’t write’ moment this week….

  29. Joanna Youngon Mar 8th 2008 at 9:14 am

    Here’s mine

Hope you’ll forgive me for stretching the point!

Thanks for chiming in this month!

I so nearly didn’t make it this month, and it’s taken a lot of effort to even put it together, but here it is: What I Learned From The Law… Of The Playground.
Hope it’s OK! Oh, and while you’re predicting favourite cookie flavours, what’s mine? I think I’ve earned one ;-)
