What I Learned From 2007 - Derrick Kwa

If you're new around these parts, I just want to say how much I appreciate your dropping by! Oh, and you may want to subscribe to my feed. Thanks, and a tip o' the hat to ya!

WILF ChristmasInquiring minds want to know: What were the most amazing, profound, surprising, or even whacky things you’ve learned over the last year?

Here’s an entry from Derrick Kwa, the interesting young mind behind Sui Generis. I have to say, Singapore has always been on my “places I’d like to see” list. I was at least pretty close back in 2000 when I spent three months working in Taiwan (hey at least it was on the same side of the International Date Line!) But nope, not quite. *Sigh* Maybe one day…

Best of Sui Generis 2007

I’ve only been blogging 7 months or so, but it’s been an awesome journey. What a 7 months. Lots of stuff has happened, and I’ve learned so much. So here’s my “What I Learned From…” entry, a sneak peek at the best Sui Generis has had to offer over the year, if you will. And also, how it’s changed.

May – I started blogging regularly in the middle of May. The start to an awesome experience. And “Making a Difference” served as a good starting point for my blog. It really summed up what I believe – that we all can make a difference. It might be not be easy, but it’s simple enough. And we can all do it.

June – My most active month (with regards to blogging) so far. And in “Education: A Cul-de-Sac?”, I summed up what I think the biggest problem with the current formal education system is. At least for my case, it was too much of just going through the motions.

July – Almost all of us have celebrities/stars who we want to be like. For me, they are people like Mitch Joel, Seth Godin, Chris Brogan and the like. In “Stars and Role Models”, I compare stars (in the astronomy sense) to stars (in the celebrity sense), and show you that you can be a star too.

August – Ever have trouble finding what you’re meant to be doing? Like you have so many interests, and you don’t know which is the best for you? Or the flip side, you just don’t seem to be able to find something that interests you. This post about “P.A.S.S.I.O.N” should be of help.

September – The highlight of September was without a doubt the Superhero series, where I encourage you to step out and make a difference. You can see the round up here, but I’d encourage you to read the whole series.

October – The world changes, and to stay on top, you need to reinvent yourself. In October, I took a look at Dwight Yorke, and the lessons about reinvention that we can all learn from him.

November – Around the month of November (after coming back from Podcamp), I started posting less, but longer (and hopefully better) posts. I also launched a weekly podcast. So in many ways, November was a really significant month. In this month, I shared about my biggest influences, took a look at the World Pool Championships, and encouraged you to think differently about loneliness, among others. But the pick of the bunch, in my opinion, was “Sui Generis College”, where I reinvented college, and shared my thoughts on what I would like the education system to be like. (Okay, so I’m cheating a bit and linking to 4 posts for this month. Just consider the extra links as ‘replacements’ for the first 4 months of the year in which I didn’t blog.)

December – December has been quite a quiet month for me, blog wise. A lot of things have been going on in my life, and haven’t had much time or inspiration to write. We all have our “off” periods, I guess, where things just don’t go right, and this was one such period for me. But it did teach me to look for opportunities in the problems, as I share in this post - “Problems = Opportunity”.

So there you have it. My picks from the 7 months that I’ve been blogging.
