What I Learned From 2007 - Brad Shorr

If you're new around these parts, I just want to say how much I appreciate your dropping by! Oh, and you may want to subscribe to my feed. Thanks, and a tip o' the hat to ya!

WILF ChristmasInquiring minds want to know: What were the most amazing, profound, surprising, or even whacky things you’ve learned over the last year?

Here’s an entry from Brad Shorr, the proprietor of Word Sell, Inc. (and the, um, interesting mind behind these cartoons). Brad and I have yet to physically meet (although I think we’ve been within a few miles of each other several times when I’ve been passing through the Chicago area) but I still consider him a buddy and kindred spirit.

I connected with Brad through our friend Joanna Young (who ironically enough lives in Scotland!) Just goes to show – distance is no barrier to friendship when you’ve got the internet to help build the bridge!

Although I hate to single any one post out, Brad – my favorite was September’s post.

Best of Word Sell 2007

December, 2006

Business Blogs Break Loose in 2007, because it reflected a ton of research and was an (uncharacteristically) accurate prediction.

January, 2007

The Long Tail and Sugar Packets, because I found it an entertaining and instructive metaphor for today’s entrepreneur.

March, 2007

About Writing Letters of Apology, because not enough is written on this subject.

May, 2007

How to Overcome Fear of Strategy, because it addressed a problem faced by many, many small and midsize business leaders.

June, 2007

What’s Your Favorite Business Book, because it was my best attempt at building some really meaningful blog conversation, and because it was educational and … fun!

September, 2007

Cluetrain on the Wrong Track, because I never worked my brain harder on a post, and I believe the message is important.

November, 2007

Amazon and Information Overload, because I think it’s terribly helpful advice for copywriting, Web design, and marketing and sales communication.

December, 2007

Rules of Business Relationships, because it was my best effort yet at a series post, and it generated good conversation on fundamental aspects of doing business.

Hi Bob, thanks for letting me kick off Blogapalooza (love the name!). One of these days we’ll have to get together.

    Hi Brad and Robert

I hope I can piggy-back on the get together!

I enjoyed this round up, some of them were written before I started blog reading, so it was a treat to dig into your archives. I liked the piece on writing an apology - it’s the sort of thing people need to know and want to learn how to do - but it’s hard to find a guide that’ll tell you how to go about it.

Hi Joanna, maybe we can all meet one of these days. Sardinia is still on my radar, and there’s going to be a big blog conference in Chicago in May - SOBCon08.

    Brad,

Lots of great stuff! I think your critique of ‘Cluetrain’ is right on the money. Generally you will have more success influencing someone if you don’t begin by telling them they’re corrupt buffoons (even if they are).

A great start to the Blogapalooza! I agree Brad’s September post is outstanding.

Brad & Joanna: Who knew when we met it would be the basis of a blogger’s version of the 3 Musketeers? :-)

Hey, who knows? We might all get to meet at SobCON 08 this year - although a vacation in Sardinia sounds pretty wonderful! *sigh*

Maybe when I’m rich and famous. Or rich. Or, what the heck; famous!

Mike: Gotta agree with your “guideline”. Good one!

  9. Robert Hruzekon Jan 7th 2008 at 12:41 pm

Hi Lillie! I completely agree - great start, y’all!

    Much, much more to come!

Looking forward to meeting everybody at SOBCon. Sure hope Joanna can make it. Mike, your observation is right on target. Sigh.

    Brad,

So, you were first, and I was last…interesting!

Enjoyed your post–just as I always enjoy your blog!

    Alas, Brad…

…Another entry was added after mine, so I’m no longer last–technically, at least. I do strongly suspect, though, that, because that entry got sidetracked via “various spam filters/draft folders,” it likely arrived before mine.

(Does any of this matter? Not really–except that now my first comment on this post won’t seem so ridiculous to anyone who’s read Robert’s updated list of “All Entries”!)

    Cheers!

I guess I could always reorder the list… naaah.

    Robert,

You’ve already worked HARD ENOUGH on this writing project, which all of us who have written and/or read the entries, greatly appreciate!

    Wonderful job!

Thanks, Jeanne! It was a blast doing it this way, this time… but I’m glad this thing is only going to come once a year…
