Urk? What Gives?
If you're new around these parts, I just want to say how much I appreciate your dropping by! Oh, and you may want to subscribe to my feed. Thanks, and a tip o' the hat to ya!

In case anybody is wondering…
I just upgraded from Wordpress 2.1.3 to 2.2, and now I notice quite a few, if not all, special characters (like apostrophes and dashes) now show up as embedded gibberish!
Anybody know how to fix that - other than having to go and manually correct each one?
You know, it would just be absolutely finer than a frogs hair if you would subscribe to my RSS feed!

Not only that, your site has been infected by nonsense words such as “urk”!
I’ve no idea what the problem is; I’ve been putting off the 2.2 upgrade, myself. Hope you manage to fix it painlessly.
“Urk” a nonsense word? What part of the world are you from anyway? It’s an old Coushatta Indian word that translates roughly I’m about to spray whatever I’m drinking all over you!
Similar to “glb”, which means Pardon me, but I’m choking on this Kit-Kat bar. Do you know the Heimlich Maneuver?
Robert, have a look at this wordpress support article http://wordpress.org/support/topic/122376
I had the same problem when I upgraded. I’m not letting it bug me though. The only corrections I made were to my WordPress pages and any Home page words that were messed up.
What I am looking for is a WordPress plug-in that would allow my readers to subscribe to a particular post thread of comments. Any ideas?
Robert,
I had the same thing happen on a new site I’m creating for a client. Fortunately, I didn’t have much there yet so I could easily correct the errors.
Although I really want to upgrade to 2.2 and change my theme, I’ve put off doing either … just thinking of all the possible glitches.
Angela, Something else on my to-do list is to install this plug-in: Subscribe to Comments 2.1 at http://txfx.net/code/wordpress/subscribe-to-comments/ - I have not used it yet, so I can’t recommend it. But it sounds like it should do what you want. If you try it, I’d love to know how it works for you.
Come to think of it, the “Search and Replace” plugin could do the trick. You have to be careful with it though; I broke heaps of links using it.

Robert,
Edit your wp-config.php files as described here: http://www.liewcf.com/blog/archives/2007/05/fix-wrong-encoding-after-upgrade-wordpress-22/
Methinks you’ve angered the flying spaghetti monster.
Repent, and all gibberish will be forgiven.
Wow! Thanks for all the feedback, folks!
The only problem is, I still don’t know what to do. After reading that WP support article, now I’m terrified I might REALLY screw something up if I tinkered with it the wrong way!
Plus, I have no idea where the wp-config.php file actually is. When I look under my “presentation” tab, none of the .php files contain the section mentioned in the article.
I thought the article says I have to create the file. Or did I read that right?
Sorry to be such a dweeb about this, folks, but I’m really not that much into the nuts and bolts - I just want to be able to USE it.
Robert, I had the same problem, as well as, others. I think I will give Tony’s advice a try.
It works! Awesome!
Um… where is the wp-config.php file?
wp-config.php fixed Bob. (thanks for the point in the right direction Tony!)
