What I Learned From 2007 – Mike DeWitt

WILF ChristmasInquiring minds want to know: What were the most amazing, profound, surprising, or even whacky things you’ve learned over the last year?

Here’s an entry from my good friend, the Ghostbuster himself, Mike DeWitt of Spooky Action. Mike made me the promise that he would participate in every single WILF! We’ll see if he’s still hangin’ on by the year 2015! Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

Well, my friend, don’t think of it as “just another post” every month; think of it as content for a future e-book!

What the blogosphere can be in 2008 and beyond. Or maybe just what my little odd corner of it might look like. Mr. MZM has invited us to reflect on learning by month, so although these are not my favorite posts by month, I learned from each of them (and for someone as dense as me that’s saying something!)

JanuaryFour Jokes to Live By: What are the important life lessons you can learn from four classic jokes? Why not invest 11 minutes and find out?

February - Where is the Line Between Gift and Investment: The most important lesson I learned about my blog. And a fun question to ponder…

March - Lucid Awakeness: Not sure that’s a real term, but it’s a real concept. Can you take control of your life by asking yourself two questions? I think so. Judge for yourself. [Note: this concept was discussed in the January podcast if you didn't listen to it]

April - The 21 Biggest Technology Flops? Who Writes This Stuff?: People are supposed to learn from their mistakes, so let’s look at a Computerworld’s list of biggest technology flops. There are a few lessons here, but mostly it’s snarky commentary covered with snarky commentary jimmies. Mmm!

May - Commitment and Consistency: “I know how to brainwash you. So does Charlie Munger, vice-chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. We both learned the secret from Prof. Robert Cialdini, who learned it from the Chinese. Would you like to know how it’s done? I can teach you in about two minutes.”

June - The Theory of (Personal Productivity) Constraints: How a once-iconoclastic theory of manufacturing and Marcus Buckingham’s “focus on your strengths” relate to form a guide to maximizing your productivity!

July - WIIFM and MMFI: Want to keep your clients and prospects happy? Focus on those two acronyms and you’ll never fail!

August - What I Learned from an Unscheduled Trip to the Bottom of the Grand Canyon: My most unusual WILF entry, but one of my favorite posts of the year.

September - The Key to The Secret in One Picture: I defy you to view the picture and not agree…

October - Asset vs. Liability Processes: How do you decide which processes are most important to improve? The single most important distinction in deciding the answer to that question. This was later incorporated into the Business Process Transformation Video.

November - What I Learned from A Hole in the Sky: A life lesson that profoundly changed my outlook on what is possible in a single afternoon.

December - The Best Business Book of 2008: Sometimes it makes sense to learn from others. A review of the professional lessons learned by one of my heroes: David Maister.

I hope you enjoy the posts as much as I enjoyed creating them. Much more interactive goodness ahead in 2008!

None of the links worked for me.

    Hi Bob,

I noticed that all of the links had “/t_blank” added to them, and thus don’t work.

    Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!

    Mike

Whoops! Don’t know what happened there, folks; slight technical difficulty. Probably wasn’t holding my mouth right when I pushed “Publish”.

    Anyway, fixed now – enjoy!

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for fixing that, and thanks so much for this awesome version of WILF! My personal productivity this week is suffering precipitously, but I’m really enjoying all the contributions.

    Mike

Oops! I meant to say my productivity has plummeted precipitously!

    Alliteration is fun! ;-)

Mike: People whose personal productivity has plummeted precipitously perhaps should particularly ponder people whose participation in pandemonium is possibly pedantic – don’t you think? :-D

    Perhaps.

    LOL
