What I Learned From 2007 – Scott Roche
Inquiring minds want to know: What were the most amazing, profound, surprising, or even whacky things you’ve learned over the last year?
Here’s an entry from Scott Roche of Spiritual Tramp:
Inspired by Middle Zone Musings’ WILF series and a number of other blogs I read, I decided to do something of a blog-trospective (portmanteau of blog and retrospective, oh heck there I go doing a Rachel Ray). I’d hate to call it a “best of” since that does indicate some level of quality, but I will say that these were my favorite posts from throughout the year.
Since this is being posted on a foreign [editor's note: here in Texas, we pronounce that as "fern"] blog, just a word or two about Spiritual Tramp. It’s something of a cat blog. I do write reviews, link to any writing I’ve done for other sites, post theological thoughts, and the like, but mostly it’s more of a “Hey, that’s shiny. Let me post about that!” sort of blog.
So, on to the year 2007 in review.
January – In this month’s post I pondered on the status of geeks in this brave, new world. Geeks Are The New Seers helped me to think about the different sorts of geeks there are in the world and how they may or may not be helpful.
February – Truth is relative or so society wants to tell me. Here I respond to a Richard Dawkins quote and in the process, I… process how hard it can be to stick to my moral guns in the face of having children.
March – My more theological posts are often expansions on things we talk about in church. We talked about Passive Righteousness and I mused on the dangers of the sort of active righteousness that many Christians fall into.
April - Abortion is a very hot topic. One of the things I like to encourage in myself as well as on my blog is seeing different sides of any given topic. As a result this months post leads to a debate (still ongoing) where I learn about how someone else arrived at their belief.
May – This month I learned that Soylent Green is people and that Spoilers should definitely have a shelf life.
June – Every once in while I feel the need to write a movie review. When I saw Pan’s Labyrinth on DVD I not only learned what all the fuss was about, I agreed with it.
July – In a post inspired by an article on Adoption I learned that “activist judges” often act in ways that seem driven more by random chance. It also forced me to think about how much of a role my own morality should play in what others may or may not do.
August – This month’s post is actually the beginning of a three part-er. As a Christian the Bible is naturally very important to me. A post on another blog lead me to write The Bible and Its Importance which in itself lead to a cross blog discussion on the topic. Big lesson learned yet again, you can have a respectful discussion on theological topics on the net. It’s hard but so worth it.
September - I offered to write this guest post for The Art of Getting By. Passions and Paychecks is all about how we can pursue the former and still get the latter. I’m all about that.
October - Some of my posts come about from me thinking “out loud” on a question I’ve asked myself and helping me understand myself better. Why I am a Democrat is one such instance. It’s the beginning of what I hope will be a deeper look into how my political and religious views mesh.
November - What could be a more natural post in this particular month than one on Thanksgiving? This isn’t your standard Turkey Day post though. It’s short, but the message is one that my fellow Christians need to hear.
December - Miracles is the second cross blog discussion I’ve had. It’s another great back and forth on a topic that generates a fair amount of heat under some circumstances. I think this one generated more light though and that’s always good.
Well that’s what I think are my best 12 of the year. Several of them are best, not so much because of my mad, mad skills, but because of the excellent discussions that they generated. Thanks to my commenters and readers for everything you brought to my table this year.
