Whatever You Do, Dream BIG!

Dream BIG

Have you ever had a really, really big dream? We’ve all been there at one time or another, right? See, the challenge is, sometimes you need to get to the moon, but you’re on a model rocketeer’s budget.

When I was a kid, my biggest, most over-the-top dream was to buy this kayak I’d seen advertised in those classic novels I used to read all the time (OK, they were comic books). She was a real beaut, I’m tellin’ ya! The only problem was that it was far, far more money than I ever expected see in my lifetime – at least 100 dollars!

Unfortunately, my only source of income at the time was the ridiculously small pittance my parents laughingly called an allowance, plus whatever I could scrounge up collecting soda bottles on the side of the road. Believe me, it’s pretty tough trying to make a lot of money at 3 cents a pop!

I remember lying awake at night, trying to figure out how many bottles I would have to pick up to earn enough for that beautiful, shiny new kayak (which was a laugh because I was never very good at math – still aren’t for that matter!) Let’s see now, at 3 cents a bottle, I needed… (OK, forget it, I’m using my calculator here) Oh, man! That comes out to 3,333 and one-third bottles to earn $100!

Whoa! I’d be hauling bottles to the grocery store for years! Alas, the reward just didn’t seem to justify the gargantuan effort it would take to reach the prize.

Well, it’s exactly how we’ve felt for some time when Mrs. MZM and I considered our financial future. That’s why we took the plunge and started a new business a few weeks ago. It’s pretty simple, really; I can sum it up for you in a few words.

We show a few folks here in Texas how to save money on their electricity bill, then teach a few others how to do the same thing. That’s pretty much it. Oh, you want the more detailed explanation? OK, here ya go: We show a few folks here in Texas how to save money on their electricity bill, then teach a few others how to do the same thing.

Pretty simple, really.

Bob, what a delight to see this post early in the morning. I’m a dreamer, too! Thanks.

Does it involve being helicoptered onto high tension power lines? Because if it does, I’ll consider moving to Texas! ;-)

I want (and plan on) walking across the country. That’s right, walk. And I’m not talking So. Cal to the Gulf of Mexico (sorry Bob, won’t be in Texas to network,) I mean the Columbia River (Oregon) to Delaware or Massachusetts (east coast end point not yet chosen, but around that area.) I have a nagging feeling this is just going to be some brain crack that never happens, but if it does, it should be in the next five or six years. I’ll keep you posted. ;-)

Good morning, Robyn! When I saw this photo, it was so inspirational I just knew I’d use it in a post sometime, so I got permission from the author, just in case.

Mike, would it were so! Man, that would be an interesting job, wouldn’t it? Wouldn’t you just LOVE to be able to tell folks about “what you did” just to see their faces?!?!

Sam, I think you’ve got an interesting dream there. In fact, there’s a book I read once, “Walk Across America” by Peter Jenkins, where he started out doing just that. Don’t think he finished it though. Which I guess I would know if I’d finished the book… :-D But anyway, if you ever do, you’d better keep me posted, Buddy!

Excellent concept! I love it, will be back. What a photo to illustrate the concept.

    Hi Bob

    Great picture!

(As for your new venture – did you consider joining a local business network, don’t know if your place has something like a BNI? Works a treat for a venture like yours – according to our BNI-member in the same business as you)

Howdy, Karin! Yes, but BNI only allows one of each type of business in each group, and all the local groups are saturated already.

But thanks for the thought; I appreciate that you were thinking of me! That’s very kind. You get an OOB Award, plus a tip o’ the hat! (sound of wild applause)
