Busy day today, so instead of a post, here’s a quick logic question for you.
What is the opposite of the word “not”?
Interesting question, don’t you think? Try your hand at it -Â tell me your answer and why. I’ll post my own answer in a few days and we’ll compare notes.
Say, do us all a favor, won't you? We’re fairly easy-going around these here parts, but please do NOT enter a keyword phrase or a business, product or service name as YOUR name in the comment section. It will likely get your comment labeled as spam and deleted. You MAY, however, use a real name, nickname or handle, along with a brief identifying phrase, such as "Big Bubba, Midnight Cowboy." Thanks a herd, and a tip o’ the hat to ya! - Ed.
Hi Bob
The best opposite I like is: Sure
)
(is rather an ‘inbetween’ option, still can go either way
or: “Absolutely can do!”
That’s a pretty tough one… since “not” has so many different ways it can be used, it doesn’t precisely have ONE SINGLE opposite. Since “not” is just a negative, I think the best approach is to simply say that the opposite of “not” is “not not,” thereby turning whatever initial negative you have into its positive opposite every time.
Karin, Sam; both good answers! Let’s see if there are any other takers…
I think the opposite of “not” is a short pause of 13 milliseconds where it would have been inserted in a sentence or phrase but now is … not.
Well, that’s an interesting one, Pete. Got a stopwatch?
[...] Not not. Who’s dare? [...]
hmm.. let me see:
certainly, definitely, exactly, surely, precisely…
want more? =)
Hey, not bad, Ilker! That’s why we call you “the thinker”, don’tcha know? =)
You got more? Keep going!
This is not a question that does not interest me, as you can see. I could say “is”, but then we would have to debate on what the definition of “is” is.
It is not that I understand clearly, but that I do not clearly understand. I think. (sound of head exploding)
Gee, and Bill Clinton was worried about leaving a legacy…
