The Generosity of Others

Hey, I’ve got a question I’d like to ask you.

Have you ever been the recipient of the generosity of another?

Now, I’m not talking about simple, run-of-the-mill stuff. Like when a co-worker loans you a few coins for the coke machine, or when your best friend takes you out to dinner.

No, I’m asking about a time when you may have been in, well, desperate straights, so to speak, and – solely through the help of someone else – you made it through. Or maybe you’ve been the recipient of one of those random acts of kindness that’s been popping up all over the place?

The point of my question is, has there ever been a time when something completely unlooked-for quite literally blessed your socks off?

Well, Bubba, there’s a reason for my askin’. It’s because that’s the topic for this month’s What I Learned From… groupwrite project!

December WILF Topic: What I Learned From the Generosity of Others

Yup; that’s what we’re lookin’ for this month! And remember, this isn’t about something you did. No, we’re lookin’ for something someone else did for you!

As always, our WILF projects kick off on the first Monday of every month, so that means we’re open for entries starting next Monday, December 1st.

So get ready to grab the writing device of your choice, folks, and get ready to write!

I think it’s rather appropriate for the coming season, don’t you? Ought to be interesting to hear folks’ stories…

This is a topic dear to my heart. I bought a little book about random acts of kindness a while back and it was one of the most heartwarming books ever. So a whole raft of generosity stories is bound to be a winner. Will think about it very carefully.

I clearly recall one such story and it was my own dad who randomly helped a stranger on Christmas eve. A middle aged lady was walking home toting what looked like all her Christmas shopping in big bags. We were running late (as always) but he stopped and offered her a ride home. My mother and I were in the car so she felt safe in accepting and we spent the 5 or 8 minutes to deliver her to her house. (oh it was snowing hard at the time)

Hi Robert! What a great topic. I am looking forward to contributing. NaNo will be over (yes that was the sound of loud cheering) and I will be back to normal (okay, okay, my version of normal). I can’t wait to read the contributions. What a wonderful and perfect opportunity to give thanks for our blessings.

I don’t have a blog, but I am would like to publicly say thank-you to a woman who helped my adult daughter in the Raleigh airport last month. My daughters purse was stolen along with her ID, her money, her cell phone – she was well and truly stranded. A stranger gave her a ride to her hotel (where her room was prepaid) and $20 so she could eat dinner and call us for help. Hoorah for the kindness of strangers!

  16. Robert Hruzekon Nov 24th 2008 at 7:01 pm

@Karen – Yup; this is one topic that sorta “picked itself”, if you get my meanin’! I’m really looking forward to reading the stories, too. It’s always amazing to see how generosity can truly change lives. I think this will be a great reminder – for all of us!

  17. Robert Hruzekon Nov 24th 2008 at 7:03 pm

    Hi Robert,
Tina Howard over at spaghettipie suggested that my recent post, Ten Dollar Blessing, would be a good fit for your writing project. I really think you have a great thing going on here, with these writing projects. And I’m particularly intrigued by this one — the Generosity of Others. My post is really a small thing — perhaps not what you’re looking for — but I am learning, too, that when people do little things for others, they are doing big things for the Lord. And the blessing we received made my little girl’s day.

    Ed,

Great idea. Will get to work on something for ya, a time when people came around us and helped put us back together again. In the meantime, have a little Ten Dollar Blessing challenge post for ya entitled “Count Your Blessings” posted this morning.

@Chris – I read your excellent post, and it’s exactly the sort of thing we’re looking for with this project. Thanks for sharing it!
