Great Quotes #22

QuotesHowdy, y’all! Hey, since next week is going to be something special (come back tomorrow and you can read all about it), I’m posting this month’s Great Quotes a bit earlier than usual.

So, if you find yourself searching for some encouragement, inspiration or perhaps even just a chuckle or two, you’ve come to the right place. I think you’ll agree they may even impart a bit of wisdom – along with a bit of fun!

Check these out:

  • Enrico FermiIt is no good to try to stop knowledge from going forward. Ignorance is never better than knowledge. – Enrico Fermi
  • Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create. – Albert Einstein.
  • Hanging is too good for a man who makes puns; he should be drawn and quoted. – Fred Allen
  • We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars. – Oscar Wilde
  • I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it. – Thomas Jefferson
  • Sir Arthur Conan DoyleIt has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important. – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
  • You can’t keep blaming yourself; just blame yourself once and move on. – Homer Simpson
  • We learn something every day, and lots of times it’s that what we learned the day before was wrong. – Bill Vaughan
  • Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside a dog it’s too dark to read. - Groucho Marx
  • That we are smarter than algae is a given. Whether we are wiser remains an open question. – Robert Frenay
  • Gustave FlaubertTo be stupid, selfish, and have good health are three requirements for happiness, though if stupidity is lacking, all is lost. – Gustave Flaubert
  • If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what is the significance of a clean desk? – Laurence J. Peter
  • The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity. – Dorothy Parker
  • There are no wrong decisions, only different paths. – Amy Palko

And finally, for a point to ponder on personal hygiene, I give you:

  • Zig ZiglarPeople often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily. – Zig Ziglar

How do you do it, Robert? Every time, fabulous quotes I’ve never heard. Einstein knocked it out of the park. Makes me wonder – can a person learn to be imaginative?

  2. Karen Swimon Apr 25th 2008 at 8:39 am

Robert, these are great! I love Amy’s quote and the Homer Simpson quote is priceless. Thanks for the shot of inspiration Robert!

  3. Robert Hruzekon Apr 25th 2008 at 10:02 am

@Brad – Yes, I believe imagination/creativity CAN be developed, just like any other skill; all it takes is practice – and a willingness to “think differently” from what you’re used to (which, come to think of it, is actually the hard part). Just ask Roger von Oech.

As to how I come up with these things, I’m afraid I can’t reveal my technique; it’s a trade secret. But I can tell you this – it’s a LOT of trouble! And, I’m not sure how long I’m going to be able to keep it up, either. Do you KNOW how much it costs to feed all those monkeys?

@Karen – Thanks, I liked those too, and I thought it would be fun to surprise Amy.

  5. Joanna Youngon Apr 25th 2008 at 3:48 pm

Priceless! I’m glad you included Amy’s words of wisdom to me too.

I wonder who’s keeping the list of great of Hruzek quotes for future reference? :-)

    Joanna

PS This time next week we’ll be meeting up! How cool is that?!

I certainly was surprised! And flattered to be in such great company. Oscar Wilde, Albert Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, Dorothy Parker and Amy Palko. That does wonders for the ego, I can tell you ;-)

  7. Robert Hruzekon Apr 25th 2008 at 6:12 pm

Howdy, Joanna! Yeah, I figured they’d strike a chord with you (I think it’s F-sharp); they certainly did for me! As for *ahem* “great Hruzek quotes”… well, I suppose they might make good outhouse reading…

Be seein’ ya next week! :-D

  8. Robert Hruzekon Apr 25th 2008 at 6:14 pm

Amy, how does it feel to be in such stellar company? I have to say, that quote ranks right up there!

  9. Matthijs Hofstedeon Apr 29th 2008 at 1:45 am

Thanks for the inspiration. I need it todaybecause it’s my last change to do something constructive at work this week (you know it’s Queensday in Holland tomorrow) .

  10. Robert Hruzekon Apr 29th 2008 at 5:32 am

You’re welcome, Matthijs; give my regards to the Queen!

My favorite is from Homer Simpson: “You can’t keep blaming yourself; just blame yourself once and move on”
